The Bullet and the Murder Ballad

Yesterday we started recording guitar parts for a murder ballad that will be on the new One-Eyed Doll album, and it became very clear to me that I needed a special instrument..

Jason and I spent much of the evening and the next afternoon on the hunt [if i may] for the right bullet shell. We scoured Austin for crime scenes, gun shops and shooting ranges and finally found the right one: a silver Winchester. We went back to the studio and played around with it on the guitar - got some sweet tones for the song... As it turns out, a bullet makes a sick slide.

I'm saving the murder ballad bullet to give it away in a contest later on that I'll likely host at the official fan club... Join the fan club to have the chance to win it...

Silver Winchester Bullet Slide

A silver bullet huh? The werewolves at Nebulost better watch their ass! This is probably not related, but I remember back in L.A. when James Navarro was recording with Jane's Addiction back in the old days. He was looking for a particularly unique sound for a slide guitar song. He tried everything including a Zippo both lit and not lit but nothing really seemed to get it.
(Even with loads and loads of echo).

Some chick left her purse in the control room and well it was like
4 AM in the morning so we thought, "so what" and started rummaging through it and then dumped it out on the floor.
Low and behold!
It was Silver. It was about seven inches long. It was smooth all over and when you turned the base it made a funny sound and began to vibrate like a cranked up Harley on steroids. None of us new what it was. However, my personal theory is that it may have been some kind of high tech lipstick tube or something.
Maybe the vibrations keep the lipstick soft for easy application? Who knows?
Anyway...It was the perfect sound and the perfect slide. Beautiful.
It sounded like the end of the world!
Years later I saw Jane's Addiction play at The Center Stage in Atlanta. I almost died with laughter when Dave Produced the "Slide" and proceeded to Rock The House.
Hmmmmm....It was Silver. Coincidence? You decide!

LOVE

Heh...

The Flametrick Subs use a very similar device on their guitar at the end of a song called BuZZ Bomb.

Bullet vs Knife

Ahhhh yes if a bullet makes a good guitar slide amagine what a knife can do....lol

Subject Heading!!!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (You can tell when Matthew is excited when he cant think of a good subject heading and screams a lot. He also does this really weird dance jig but that that doesn't translate very well into his writing) Woohoo! New Tunage!
