It's not everyday a rock n' roll icon comes along that captivates the hearts and minds of their fans, with such emotional impact. Kimberly Freeman (solo artist and front woman for One-Eyed Doll) is one of these icons. Like rock legend poets Patti Smith and Kurt Cobain, Kimberly writes from the heart and soul. To give any less would be against the punk rock ethos that made them into the people they are, as well as remembered.

Kimberly Freeman's "Sleep Lyrics and Notes" (Formatted by Jonny Flash), is an in-depth view into her heart and mind, in the events leading up to her first solo album.

Though the book is more of a journal than a novel, nothing brings you closer to the artist's inspiration and composition for the "Sleep" album, than the music itself.

I was first captivated by the sincerity of Miss Freeman's personal handwritten introduction, followed by her feelings of loss, rejection, and despair, that fueled and continues to fuel her creative genius.
This being the first solo album by Kimberly Freeman, it was a bold, beautiful move to share her past with us, her loyal fans.

I highly recommend this to anyone. The words speak for themselves here. There is no faking, no trickery of words, just Kimberly. And this is why we love her. She's the real deal.

And like the Xenomorph which had burst from the very depths of Kane, so does Sleep: Lyrics and Notes come forth from Kimberly Freeman to bestow upon us its sorrowful grace... This is, of course, metaphorically speaking. I mean Kane totally kicked the bucket in "Alien," and us fans kind of fancy the live and well Kimberly. She's much more creative and goofy that way. Now, the book located above this review for your, possible, buying pleasure could best be described as a companion piece to the album Sleep, which contains some of the most beautifully poignant music these ears have had the pleasure to hear. What truly makes this book wonderful is that it is powerful enough to survive as a standalone work. Now I, wholeheartedly, believe that the album should not be missed out on, but the lyrics and the added personal notes of Kimberly Freeman are so pure and engrossing that one could easily find themselves lost in her heart and mind. The whole package was put together by a man named Jonny Flash and he's done a tidy and thorough job. Good Job Jonny Flash! I'll finish by not going into the contents of the notes or by reciting any of the lyrics but instead by bringing up my, absolutely, favorite thing about the book. And that is the fact that it is handwritten. Typeface is efficient and easy on the eyes, but it is also, without looking at the meaning behind the words, cold and dead. To write with the hand is to place our very identity upon the page and the idiosyncrasies of our writing becomes an art itself. Even without putting meanings behind her words, we are allowed to see Kimberly just by glancing upon the page and I consider that to be a real treat that is lost in the day of the computer font. You needn't worry about the legibility of her words for this is not an abstract piece of art. Now, do yourself a great service and venture into the world of an artist and a wonderful human being..... Also, the unicorn drawing done by Kimberly on the back is pretty darn spiffy too.

This book is an excellant way to see the thought process an artist goes through to develope an album. I've thouroughly enjoyed listening to her albums but her solo album is by far my favorite. Stripped of the usual studio tricks, the album is just her and a guitar recordered in various places in Austin, TX. This book covers the time period when she was developing songs for that album. Do yourself a favor and pick up both here solo album and this book and you can get as far inside the artists head as possible.

It's raw and sweet, the best way to know more about Kimberly and her music, where she finds some of her inspiration, how she finds the strength to keep giving us the great music she shares, and just like chatting with her, this diary style tidbit lets us into the brain space of a fabulously caring and random doll.
It's written in a very real style, because it's real and stuff. The text is handwritten in her lovely, quirky yet easy to read script and there are pictures. I heart books with pictures. =-)
If you already know and love her music, you'll adore this book for the insight it allows. If you don't already know and love her music, it'll get you curious enough to check it out....then the knowing and loving will ensue.
It's just like she is. Warm, sometimes heartwrenching, usually funny and entirely beautiful.

This book is fantastic. It has the lyrics to all of Kim's songs on the Sleep album along with a couple stories about the songs and pictures! What book has pictures now adays?! It is a beautiful take of Kim's struggle with loss and pain. Something we all can relate to. From the dedication page to the thank you to the reader, this book has made me understand her more. As an artist and as a person. I thank the universe everyday that I get to know her.

I thought the book was amazing and you could really feel the emotions put into it. I only wish it would have been longer, it felt like it ended too soon...maybe an Autobiography next?
